It is completely natural to feel curious, uncertain, or even slightly anxious before trying Guided Imagery and Music (GIM), especially if you have never experienced anything like it before. Many people wonder what might happen, whether they are “doing it right,” or if the experience will feel overwhelming. These concerns are very common.
“What if I don’t see any images?”
Some people experience vivid visual images, while others notice sensations, emotions, memories, or a sense of knowing. All of these are valid forms of imagery. There is no right or wrong way to experience GIM, and nothing needs to be forced. Whatever arises is enough.
“Will I lose control or be hypnotised?”
No. You remain aware and in control throughout the session. GIM is not hypnosis. You can speak, move, or stop the session at any time. The Guide supports you, but you decide how deeply you wish to go.
“What if difficult emotions come up?”
Sometimes strong feelings such as sadness, fear, or grief may surface, especially if they have been held inside for a long time. This happens within a safe and supportive therapeutic space. The Guide helps you stay grounded and only explores what feels manageable. Nothing is pushed, and pacing is always respected.
“Do I need to be musical or imaginative?”
No musical knowledge, creativity, or prior experience is needed. You do not have to imagine anything deliberately. The music simply helps your inner experience unfold naturally.
“What if the experience feels strange or confusing?”
GIM experiences do not always make immediate sense. Meaning often emerges gradually, sometimes after the session. Confusion can be part of the process and does not mean something has gone wrong.
“Is GIM right for me?”
GIM can be helpful for people who feel stuck, overwhelmed, disconnected, or unable to fully express themselves in words. It can also support personal growth, emotional integration, and spiritual exploration. An initial conversation with the Guide helps determine whether GIM is suitable for you at this time.
Above all, GIM is a respectful and collaborative process. You are met exactly where you are, and your experience is honoured without judgement. Many clients describe GIM as deeply calming, meaningful, and reassuring—a space where they can listen to themselves in a new and compassionate way.
